Tech's Bowl Prospects11/23/09 - With only two games left, the Hokies are looking to keep their spirits high in hopes of a bowl game. Saturday the Hokies stomped NC State.
Right now, projections have the Tech team squaring off against either Cincinnati or Pitt in the Gator Bowl.
In order to get there, the Hokies must secure a win against their biggest rivals, the Cavaliers next weekend in their final regular season game. Kick-off is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m in Charlottesville.
Johnson Races into Record Books11/23/09 - All Jimmie Johnson ever wanted was a chance to race with the best in NASCAR. Maybe even win a race or two. Never did he expect to be a champion. Especially four times over.
Johnson bulldozed his way into the record books by becoming the first driver in NASCAR history to win four consecutive championships, finishing fifth in Sunday’s season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where former Chesterfield resident Denny Hamlin won the race ahead of South Boston native Jeff Burton.
Johnson joined Richard Petty (seven), Dale Earnhardt (seven) and teammate Jeff Gordon (four) as the only drivers to win more than three titles.

Liberty Advances with Win over Robert E. Lee10/22/09 - As time wound down in the first half, with Robert E. Lee seeking to break a 14-14 tie at Liberty High in a Region III, Division 3, semifinal rematch with the Minutemen, Anthony Reynolds made a one-handed interception of a 20-yard pass by Lee quarterback Devante White near his own goal line.
The ball was tipped around twice by teammates before Reynolds picked it off and returned it 100-yards for an improbable score that gave Liberty a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in a 35-28 triumph.

Clarke County 'Raided' by Appomatox11/22/09 - A few moments before, Clarke County High School’s fans were screaming louder than they had all game. As two players hit Appomatox County quarterback Kenny Scott at the Eagles’ 37-yard line, they began to roar again.
Their fervor was short-lived. Scott somehow shook off the two tacklers at the line of scrimmage and wasn’t touched again until he crossed the goal line with 6:25 left in the fourth quarter, giving the Raiders the two-touchdown lead they needed to secure the win.

Gretna Advances with O.T. Win11/21/09 - It didn’t seem like much would go right for Gretna on Saturday against Buckingham. An inadvertent whistle by an official, a costly penalty on a big gain and an assortment of events kept the Hawks off balanced and out of sync.
One thing that would work was a quick slant pass to Ted Jennings, who turned those into positive gains throughout the second half, which only made it easier to go back to in overtime.
Nick Miller found Jennings on a slant route and the junior receiver did the rest, bouncing off defenders into the end zone, giving the two-time defending state champion Hawks a 28-22 overtime victory over Buckingham in the semifinals of the Region B Division 2 tournament Saturday afternoon.

Ryan William Scored 4 Tds in Hokie Win11/21/09 - Ryan Williams ran for 120 yards and four touchdowns and helped make sure No. 16 Virginia Tech would send its 21 seniors out of Lane Stadium with a win one last time as the Hokies beat North Carolina State 38-10 Saturday.
The Hokies (8-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) also got a career-best day from wide receiver Jarrett Boykin, who caught six passes for 164 yards and a touchdown, and from linebacker Cody Grimm, who tied an NCAA record by forcing three fumbles in his final home game.
N.C. State (4-7, 1-6) lost its second straight and for the sixth time in seven games. The Wolfpack allowed at least 30 points for the eighth game in a row, and struggled on offense, turning the ball over four times and allowing five sacks of Russell Wilson.
Hidden Valley Falls to Christiansburg11/21/09 - Christiansburg lost to Salem 45-43 in three overtimes the first time around. They needed to get past Hidden Valley, another team they fell short against in the regular season, 28-21.
Saturday they earned their rematch with Salem. The Blue Demons stifled the Titans big gun, David Williams, and took advantage of the field position battle to ring up a solid 28-3 win. The Blue Demons will now face Salem in the Division 4 Region IV Title game.
Salem gets by Magna Vista11/21/09 - The Salem Spartans quest for a state championship began last night at home with their game against Magna Vista. Magna Vista has struggled in the post season as of late, not winning a regional championship game since 2003.
Salem started the scoring when Adam McGarell found a familiar target in Anthony Tolliver who picked up 22 yards, but was brought down short of the endzone. That play set up Adam Collie for the goaline strike as he powers his way into the endzone for six points. The extra point was good and Salem found themselves with a 7-0 lead.
Magna Vista got a break in the third quarter when McGarell threw a pass that was picked off by Nick Lacobucci. Qb Harvey Taylor would later keep it himself near the endzone, and with a little help from his friends crossed the goaline to draw the score even, 7 all.
With under a minute to play in regulation Salem was within striking distance. Collie got the call and fought his way through the Magna Vista defense for the game winning score. Salem advances, squeaking by a tough Magna Vista team by the final of 14-7.
11/21/09 - The No. 2 Virginia field hockey team fell 3-2 in the NCAA semifinals to third-seeded North Carolina on Friday in Winston-Salem,
N.C. Senior Traci Ragukas and sophomore Paige Selenski scored for the
Cavaliers.
Ending a historic year at 20-4, Virginia set a program record for wins in a
season and games played. The team made its third overall appearance in the
NCAA semifinals and its first since 1998.
11/21/09 - In a game featured on ESPN 106.3 FM WMNA Danville the Franklin County Eagles traveled to Battlefield High School to take on the Bobcats. This marks the second time in as many weeks Franklin County has had to travel more than 160 miles to play.
This road trip would prove to be an even longer trip home as the Bobcats were an unforgiving host. Battlefield jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Bo Revell rifled in a pass to Blaine Mason who turned it up field for a huge 79 TD reception.
The second quarter would not be any better for Franklin County. Nagee Jackson carried the load majority of the game for Battlefield and found the endzone on a 4 yard TD run. A bad snap and pressure by Franklin County special teams forced the missed extra point, leaving the score 13-0 in favor of the Bobcats.

Altavista shuts down Madison County11/21/09 - Altavista faced Madison County in Region B high school playoff action. The Colonels finished the season strong with a 9-1 record, but would be put to the test against Madison county Friday night.
After a scoreless first quarter the stage was set for a defensive match-up. Altavista finally broke the scoreless tie in the second quarter off the foot of Blake Todd and his 29 yard field goal to put the Colonels up 3-0.
Madison County would try to respond. Ralph Yates had some great blocks on the kickoff, turning in a 35 yard return to set up great field position for Madison Co. They were not able to capitalize on the fied position, leaving the score 3-0 in favor of Altavista in the first half.
In the thrid quarter the Colonels broke into the endzone when Rick Adams got the call on the goal line to put the Colonels up 10-0. Altavista's defense would hold strong shutting down Madison County and advancing with a 10-0 victory.
Cave Spring Blanks Graham11/21/09 - Cave Spring hosted Graham at Dwight Bogle Field following their first round bye last week. Cave Spring came out fresh against a team they had already blown out earlier in the season.
Michael Cole got things started early in the contest with an interception for the Knights. Graham had been moving the ball well before the pick as they were nearing the redzone. Cave Spring would capatalize on the mistake as Josh Woodrum found Quentin Dill who did most of the work on an 83 yard TD strike. Cave Spring was up 7-0 before two minutes had even ticked off the clock.
The Knights would extend the lead to 14-0 on their very next possesion. Sam Wright would get the call on a draw and take it eight yards to paydirt.
Cave Spring's offense was seemingly able to move the ball at will against Graham. A 68 yard drive that featured a lot of Wright would end in a touchdown when Woodrum called his own number for a 6 yard touchdown scamper. The Knights led 21-0 at the end of the half.
Cave Spring would be relentless in this game. Woodrum found Dill for a screen pass that would turn into a 49 yard gain before being brought down 2 yards shy of the endzone. Wright would punch it in to put the Knights up 28-0.
Cave Spring would go on to win by the final of 42-0.
Amherst Wins Big11/21/09 - Amherst put their perfect season on the line against Spotswood Friday night in a Region III, Division 4 playoff match-up. The top seeded Lancers had the advantage of playing in front of their home fans.
Lancers QB Kirby Anderson was on point from the beginning. He found an open Anthony Rose for a huge gain that would put Amherst in the redzone. Anderson later decided to keep it himself on a QB sneak from a yard out for the score and an early Amherst lead.
A heavy dose of running backs Mario Vaughn and Jamal Glover kept Spotswood on their heels. Vaughn with his power running ability and Glover's speed and elusiveness was troublesome all game for Spotswood.
Amherst had little trouble blowing out Spotswood by the final of 53-14.
Vikings Swat Bees out of Playoffs11/21/09 - The Brookville Bees were buzzing in the first half behind the arm of Freshman QB Kendall Becraft. Becraft had a near perfect QB rating completing 10 of 13 passes for 206 yards and two TDs in the first half as Brookville jumped out to a 13-0 lead over Northside.
The second half would be a different story. Northside seemed to make all the right adjustment at halftime. The Vikings put pressure on the Freshman quarterback sacking him 5 times and picking him off once in the second half. Northside would score 21 unanswered points while their defense stepped up, keeping the Bees scoreless in the second half. The Vikings would take the game and advance in the playoffs with an eight point win, 21-13.
Liberty vs Robert E. Lee Game Postponed11/20/09 - The Region III, Division 3, semifinal between Robert E. Lee and Liberty in Bedford has been postponed to Saturday at 7 p.m.

Former Heritage Grad makes Impact for High Point11/20/09 - Growing up in Lynchburg, Heritage High graduate Brielle Spencer and her family made an annual trek to Chapel Hill, N.C., nearly every November to watch the University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer team play in the early rounds of the NCAA tournament.
Last Friday, Spencer, now a sophomore at High Point University, started at central defender against the fourth-ranked Tar Heels in the NCAA opener and helped the Panthers hold the defending national champions scoreless for nearly 70 minutes on their home field.
UNC (18-3-1) eventually prevailed, 1-0, ending the season for High Point (7-15-2), which won six of its final eight games, five by shutout. But it was the thrill of a lifetime for Spencer and her teammates.
